World Cup Part 1

June 17, 2018 by Laura Komkov in Sports

Alright, my friends, we're a few days in to the World Cup and so far it has lived up to all of my expectations. Here's a recap of some of the action that's happened so far for those who haven't had a chance to watch (and if you have been watching, relive the glory):

World Cup 2018 Begins

June 14, 2018 by Laura Komkov in Sports

Well, if there's a good time for anyone who writes about sports to pick things back up, I'd say the World Cup is it. Every four years, the whole world comes together for a month to watch the beautiful game. Even if you're not typically a soccer fan, I can guarantee you'll get swept up in the World Cup if you just give it a chance.

NCAAF: Week 3

September 17, 2016 by Laura Komkov in Sports

Saturday is here and that means it's time to pop some popcorn, turn on the TV (or maybe 2 or 3 TVs so you can catch everything good at once) and watch some college football. Last week didn't have any really great match ups in the college football world, but week 3 looks like it'll make up for that. Here are some of the games I'm looking forward to today:

NFL Kick Off

September 08, 2016 by Laura Komkov in Sports

The NFL kicks off tonight with a rematch of last year's Super Bowl: Denver Broncos vs. Carolina Panthers. I won't lie - the Super Bowl rematch is always a bit of a let down for me, and I imagine it'll be even more of a let down without Peyton Manning on the Broncos this year.

Week 1 Recap

September 05, 2016 by Laura Komkov in Sports

What a win by Texas last night! If you weren't watching, I highly recommend that you take a look at the last 5 minutes of the game (plus overtime). The start of the game wasn't very interesting, but it definitely picked up when it really counted.

Are You Ready For Some Football?

September 03, 2016 by Laura Komkov in Sports

My favorite time of the year is finally here: football season! Growing up in Texas, I've loved football since I was a kid. That love turned into somewhat of an obsessive passion, and now, if you're ever looking for anyone to "talk football shop" with, I am that person.

Rio 2016

August 09, 2016 by Laura Komkov in Sports

Yes, I'm a little late to the game here - to be fair, I've been completely absorbed so I haven't had time to write - but the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio started late last week. If you haven't been watching, turn on NBC or NBC Sports or Bravo or BBC - just find a channel (or app) with coverage and watch. We only get the Summer Games every four years after all.

The Comeback King

July 06, 2016 by Laura Komkov in Sports

This morning at Wimbledon, the world witnessed one of the greatest comebacks of all time. Roger Federer, at 34 years of age (35 in early August), fell behind 2 sets to none against Marin Cilic, a 6'6" tall 27-year-old with a killer serve. Cilic won the first two sets of the match and looked dominant. His serve had Federer looking slow and nervous. Federer had not performed well in recent years when falling behind 0-2, while Cilic had literally never lost a majors match after winning the first two sets. But somehow, Federer found his magic in the third set to stay alive and move into a fourth.

I Believe

June 21, 2016 by Laura Komkov in Sports

If you've been following the Copa America at all, you'll know that the USA has achieved its goal of making it to the semi finals. They play Argentina tonight in Houston and it should be a good one! Granted, Argentina is the #1 team in the world right now and has one of the best players of all time (Lionel Messi), so the USAMNT is a huge underdog here. Never count out the home team, though!

The Run

June 15, 2016 by Laura Komkov in Sports

Are you watching OJ: Made in America? If you're not, set your DVR now. The series is a fascinating, expertly created dissection of O.J. Simpson. Granted, there have only been 2 episodes so far, but barring a huge drop in quality, I guarantee this series is worth your time.

Ahhh it's been a while - I know, I'm the worst! It's been a very hectic time at work, but no excuses, play like a champion. Has anyone been following the French Open this year? You might've not realized it started already - they pushed it up a week this year because of the Olympics.

Mamba Out // Warriors Win

April 14, 2016 by Laura Komkov in Sports

Yesterday will easily be remembered as one of the most important days of regular season NBA play in history.

To kick things off, the Golden State Warriors surpassed the 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls for the most wins in a regular season ever (73 wins). They'll now enter the playoffs as the front runner, while attempting to defend their current title.

The Beautiful Game

March 29, 2016 by Laura Komkov in Sports

Today has been a glorious day of soccer. From the international friendlies between European greats to the USA men's World Cup qualifier against Guatemala (a pretty necessary win after last week's loss to Guatemala - particularly if your name is Jürgen Klinsmann) to the U23 USA men's Olympic qualifier against Colombia.

I Am A Rock, I Am An Island

March 15, 2016 by Laura Komkov in Sports

When it comes to sports, I tend to be a Houston fan - chalk it up to all the time I spent visiting my grandparents in Houston as a kid and the fact that Austin has no pro sports teams, but it is what it is. However, I also strongly support teams that feature fantastic players with amazing stories. One of these players is Kawhi Leonard.

The Sheriff Rides Away

March 07, 2016 by Laura Komkov in Sports

“God bless all of you and God bless football.” And with that, Peyton Manning ends his 18-year NFL career. I don’t believe that any quarterback will ever understand the game of football like Peyton did. It’s been a joy to watch him basically serve as his own Offensive Coordinator, while also representing the NFL with class, graciousness, determination and skill.
