Yes, I'm a little late to the game here - to be fair, I've been completely absorbed so I haven't had time to write - but the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio started late last week. If you haven't been watching, turn on NBC or NBC Sports or Bravo or BBC - just find a channel (or app) with coverage and watch. We only get the Summer Games every four years after all.
This year's competitions have started with a bang - first, there was all of the Russia controversy - would they or wouldn't they be allowed to compete? Turns out that the entire track and field team was banned for doping/PEDs, but most other Russian athletes are still allowed to compete. Also, there's been all kinds of controversy about Rio/Brazil in general as they've been prepping for the games, so it almost felt amazing just seeing the Opening Ceremony on Friday.
As a true Olympics lover, I've been watching every day pretty much all day - coverage usually starts at 8:30am my time and runs until about midnight my time and I've caught more of the coverage than I'd like to admit. I've also been enjoying the NBC Olympics app which allows you to choose the sport you want to watch or watch replays of previous events.
A couple of shout outs so far: USA women's gymnastics has DOMINATED - I would say they're the most dominant women's gymnastics team of the modern era and Simone Biles is such a pro; USA swimming, as usual, has been putting on quite a show - Lily King and Katie Ledecky have been particularly interesting to watch on the women's side and I'm loving the Michael Phelps appearances so far; USA beach volleyball has been great - Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross have been fantastic; and props to USA men's gymnastics - I know they didn't do as well in the team finals as they could've, but man, it's crazy seeing how strong and simultaneously graceful those men are. I've really got my eye on pretty much every sport (if you haven't watched table tennis yet, check it out and get some Forrest Gump flashbacks! Also archery and shooting competitions are always strangely riveting).
First and foremost, I've just got to root on TEAM USA in every way! I'm always so proud of how fantastic our athletes are and how deeply touched they seem to feel representing our country.
Coverage will continue on all of the NBC networks until August 21st, so if you're not watching, grab some popcorn and let the games begin! Also, please let me know if you have any favorite sports that I need to make sure to catch!
